Next posters up are a couple that I've had up in my room all year. Kids actually looked these at a decent number of times but I never really liked how they looked so I keep changing the design. I think I'm happy with these now so I'm sharing. Also I take absolutely no credit for the flowchart. I found it on
Kelly O'Shea's blog when I was researching SBG awhile ago. Speaking of which I also take no credit for the second one either. The grading scale and explanations are based off of what
Jessica was so generous to share with me when I was getting started with SBG last year. Unless you use the same scale I guess that one isn't all that useful, but maybe someone can use it for something. And on the note of SBG, I used it this past year for first time and am completely obsessed. I'm probably super annoying because I have a tendency to start preaching about it to people, but I feel like it was just so successful. It's all stolen from places and in no way original, but I might write about how I implemented it one of these days. But there's also a chance that I get distracted and never get around to it, so no promises!
I like the posters! One question on how you do your grading with SBG. I believe you require them to get two 4's on a concept to get a 5, correct? If this is so, then what if a student gets two 3's, but really wants a 5. Would they then have to retake the concept two separate times outside of class in hopes of getting two fours? Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYep that's right, two 4's is a 5. Two of anything else doesn't move them anywhere..so yes they'd have to reassess at least twice more to move up. I think of it as once to prove they get it and then once again a bit later to show they remember. I'm fairly new to it all so I don't know if that's the "right" way to do it, but it works for me so far!
DeleteI would definitely be interested in reading about your SBG process. I'm seriously considering moving towards this for this school year, but it will probably be some kind of Frankenstein's-monster-SBG-hybrid. Most standards-based-grading posts I've seen online are from elementary classes. I would love to see how you implement it in yours.
ReplyDeleteIf you're looking for some good high school SBG stuff I'd highly suggest reading everything that Shawn Cornally wrote and then check out the people underneath that he mentioned. I'm going to share what I do, but they are a million times more knowledgeable and awesome!

DeleteNow for the fonts, I just opened them and they've got quite a few in there. Everything aside from the Arial & Helvetica are free downloads from different places. If you google them you should find where they're from.

ReplyDeleteI am interested in SBG. I am realizing that perhaps that this is the way to go but I won't be able to change until next. We are modified block scheduling with A and B days.

We practice standards based grading at our school and love it! However our levels are quite a bit different than yours. Do you by chance sell the posters editable so I can keep the layout but change the grade?
